Jefferson Lion’s Club 9th Annual Classic Car Show

Saturday, August 8, 2009

Clear skies and near perfect August weather again favored the Jefferson Lions Club as it recently held its Annual Classic Car Show for a ninth straight year running.  Begun in 2001 as a "colorful kickoff to the club's 12-month observance of...50 years of community service," the annual show has grown in popularity to become a major event for automotive buffs in NE Georgia and the surrounding area.

From just over 100 vehicles vying for recognition and prizes in that first show, total vehicles on display this year exceeded 150, with 149 entered into specific competitions within the numerous types, ages, and models.  In all, a special team of judges awarded 50 "Best of Show" trophies, and 11 for winners in the following individual categories:

Vehicle types alphabetically):

Best Dragster: Michael Goodwin, Jefferson, Dodge

Best Ford: Eddie Palmer, Dahlonega, 1968 Fairlane

Best General Motors: Mickey Archer, Nicholson, 1936 Chevrolet Sedan

Best International: Steve Boyd, Jefferson, 1954 Pickup

Best Mopar: Bill and Harrison Hinckle, Gainesville, 1968 Dodge Dart

Best original: Billy Head, Gainesville, 1964 Impala

Best Rat Rod: Rickey Hooper, Dillard, 1948 Chevrolet

Best Studebaker: Fred Martin, Conyers, 1947 Pickup

Best Tractor: Jimmy Payne, Bogart, 1950 Ford.

Also, two awards were made for longest distance traveled:

First place: Charles Humphrey, 1971 Chevrolet from Macon

Second place: Daryl and Shirley Painter, 1974 Plymouth from Easley, SC.

Youth awards were made to Samuel Benton who displayed a 1985 Chevrolet Corvette and to Christopher Benton who displayed a 1952 Ford.

Refreshments were available from the Lions and other vendors to competitors and to the many visitors who stopped in to admire the carefully restored, cleaned and polished "classics."  Proceeds from the show totaled nearly $3,000 which will be used at community, state, and international levels primarily to support activities on behalf of the visually and hearing impaired.

The Jefferson Lions wish to express gratitude to Jefferson High School for use of its parking lot, to Ms. Carly Grissom, announcer and music jockey, and to all who helped to make this year's ninth Annual Classic Car Show the very best yet.
